  1. The canoe may be the earliest form
  2.  of the boat.  The kayak is similar to
  3.  the canoe except that its deck is
  4.  enclosed apart from a round hole
  5.  where the paddler sits.  The basic
  6.  designs of canoes have changed
  7.  little since the 16th century, when
  8.  Native Americans made them by
  9.  hand.

  11. Sporting interest in canoeing and
  12.  kayaking began in the mid-19th
  13.  century, when a London
  14.  Scotsman took journeys on the
  15.  lakes and rivers of Europe in a
  16.  kayak-inspired boat and then
  17.  wrote and lectured about it.  By
  18.  the latter part of the 19th century,
  19.  regattas were being held all over
  20.  Western Europe.

  22. The first men's canoeing events at
  23.  the Olympics were held in 1936;
  24.  women's were added in 1948. 
  25.  Events are run on two kinds of
  26.  courses -- flatwater, and more
  27.  recently, exciting whitewater
  28.  slalom courses.  The Eastern
  29.  Europeans and Soviets have been
  30.  strong in canoeing events, but
  31.  Americans, Canadians and
  32.  Western Europeans have also had
  33.  success.
